Selkie Sanctuary

The Selkie Sanctuary is a semi off-grid seaside art studio, ceremonial space, and cottage home on land that is ritually engaged with and cared for. It is a place where many have come to restore their sealskin/soulskin. A place where intentionally created offerings come to life. Where medicine is made.

The story begins in 2017 as "The Sanctuary", a place of solo solace and community ceremony. Many hands and hearts gathered here often, always with intention, always seeking decompression, soul-tending, restoration, and connection. Everything from Solstice celebrations to weekend medicinal painting retreats. From labyrinth meditation walks to wild dance movement late into the night.

2019 saw the cottage welcome our family full time, a love story unfolded of the mythic storytelling kind, and with that, a larger volume of conscious artistic work began to be created here. The easels were readied, the kiln began firing, the apothecary filled, and the cairn grew while holding good space. Medicine began being made here more and more and more ~ traveling out and meeting people wherever they were. In this way, the "Selkie Sanctuary" came into being.

By 2024, string magic was being spun and woven nearly every day into ritual wear, mud witching of ceremonial ceramics had long been established, a seasonal dye studio and ritual fire space had been created, the amenities and accommodations expanded to include an outdoor shower and wood fired tub, dye & fibre gardens, a camper for overnight guests, additional equipment to support groups embarking on intentional creation and traditional skills had been acquired, along with a full conversion to a wild water collection system to supply all of our creative and household needs.

And more is coming too! Have a look at the Sanctuary page to look around our place, stay connected as projects develop or new structures are built, and follow us on Instagram for updates on happenings and to see the most current creations that move through our hands and out our doors.

Juliette Jarvis

She perceives subtle shifts in the wind with a turn of her fingertips
Speaks stories from unseen realms to listening hearts and ears
She navigates the currents of the natural world, Re-membering and Witnessing
Slow cooks rich brews for soul food feasting
Makes marks of medicine and births Beings with purpose
Hears the tide change its course and sings to the seals from the shore
She senses Rightness through the hairs on her arms
and the touch of her Beloved when afar
A truth teller, a way shower, a holder of sacred space
she has been called teacher, spiritual leader, mother, lover
she has been named Bean Feasa, earth selkie, Sovereign Weaver, dream maker
and walks between and within worlds
in ceremony and reciprocity

As Spiritualist
Juliette is a west coaster with a life long affinity for the natural world and the mystical stories passed to her from the women in her family. At home in the intertidal zone of the shoreline or tucked up in the Selkie Sanctuary, she is dedicated to living a soul-filled life both personally and professionally.

As a young child she began experiencing visions and premonitions which woke her personal awareness to the realm of Spirit.  Now she is a multi media artist, spiritual teacher, international best selling author, and ceremonialist adept at weaving the sacred into daily life. Her call to a westernized 'shamanic' path was recognized after a combination of traditional factors, with the most symbolic element presenting as having received many venomous spider bites from black widows from head to toe. After 15+ years of offering divination, private healing and soul restoration sessions, facilitating community ceremonies, teaching at year-long sacred living immersion programs, and spiritual practice workshops, her focus has shifted to the medicinal qualities of sacred ceramics, string magic, spirit doll making, ritual weaving, reclaiming traditional skills, and the soul-level support that carefully made, intentional, tangible workings can bring.

As Creatrix
Juliette is a maker of sacred tools, ritual wear, medicine rattles, frame drums, talismans, medicine pouches, and intentional non-permanent art through beautiful nature based earth and fire offerings. Her channeled works are created as a means of spiritual connection and devotion. Paintings full of symbols and markings etched into the paint around whimsical animals, mushrooms, and landscapes, or as intricate colour-filled mandalas that hold specific medicinal intentions for the viewer’s well-being. She brings form to wildish spirit dolls made from natural and found materials as these Beings come forward with a supportive essence and purpose. Ceremonial ceramics to facilitate energetic tending and spiritual practice come through her hands with intentions pressed right into the clay as each piece is being formed. Spinning wool, growing dye plants, and weaving on a floor loom offers a rich and varied opportunity for prayers, intentions, blessings, spell work, and energetic medicine to be wrapped and woven into the very fibres of these pieces.

As Author
Juliette is a long time writer of qathet Living Magazine's Return to Reverence monthly column and is the face behind the fortnightly advice column, Ask a Cottage Witch. She became an international best seller with her first ebook, Soul Food in Starving Times ~ medicinal morsels of a west coast bean feasa, and found continued success with How to Be in Circle: Forgotten etiquette for sacred gatherings. Currently she's writing her debut in fiction, Of Mud, Blood, String and Bone and is a proud member of the Federation of BC Writers.

qathet Flax to Linen Community
From seed to shirt in local dirt!
Led by collaborators and community driven, this grass-roots endeavour invites us to connect more deeply with the land, the fibre that we wear, each other, and our Selves through the re-animation of traditional skills.

Project Vision: To work in our local region to grow linen flax, and begin to transform our region into a thriving, sustainable fibre shed. Working with local small farmers and gardeners on donated land with the support of many hands to learn how to grow, harvest, process and turn flax into fibre.  Working together to revive old and wise ways of working with the land to create durable and eco-honouring flax fibre for use in every day making.
