Talismans bring supportive items together with a specific and singular purpose. Created in ceremony and in dialogue with spirit allies, they hold a potent energy, like a sentinel or guardian. Often these are for protection, wayfinding, or as a connection to a time or place, but may be created for any purpose. Their form and makeup varies, sometimes there are many components coming together perhaps in a vial, pouch, or package, other times it may be a hand carved item, painted medallion, or other crafted piece.
The medicine pouches that I make are of either fish leather I've tanned myself or reclaimed cow leather, cotton or hemp cording, with a variety of colours and come with a simple wrap around closure thong. Size can vary but as a standard are about 2" x 2". Typically made to be worn but certainly can be carried in a pocket or tucked into a bra, kept within a larger medicine bundle, or placed on an altar. Depending on your request and needs, they may come with medicine already contained within or be waiting to be filled by you as you work with this or that plant, herb, stone, crystal, bone, sigil, element etc as is applicable. Of course, a talisman may also be kept within your pouch as well. Unless intentionally visibly worn during ceremony, the general encouragement is to keep them tucked under your shirt out of sight if possible (however, no panic if they do slip into view) and usually their contents are kept private, unless you are very comfortable with who you are sharing this information with. |
